Former NATO chief George Robertson demands UK switch public funds to the military in Washington’s wake
A strand of the western elite has been wishing for this moment for a long time. It took the Donald Trump wrecking-ball to create the conditions where we are turned into the Death Star. All our resources spent on the military and little left for the people. As I’ve been saying, what the US-led Empire do to Palestinians today, they did to native peoples yesterday and will do to the rest of us tomorrow. And now it’s our turn.
Brexit nailed the UK to the US camp and crashed the delicate balance between the three key blocs — Europe, America and China. Since then, there’s been a coordinated move towards rebuilding the military industry on steroids. After initially resisting Biden’s pressure to join in the US proxy war on a Russia shaken by nuclear NATO brought to its borders, Europe threw itself into the fight. The EU and the UK sought more and more of funding for a totally avoidable conflict, begun in 2014. Yet here they are demanding more. Did we vote for this?
The Death Star politics of Airstrip One
Only a few days ago, Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney tested the waters by lifting the ban on public money going to weapons manufacturers, sweetening the turn to war with a pause (not a halt) in arming Israel. UK Defence Secretary John Healey has long been stirring up enmity and fear between us and Russia, and threatening to go to war with China over Taiwan. Yesterday, George Robertson, former defence secretary and Blairite NATO chief during the Iraq War, told the nation that we were in deadly “peril” and his mates in NATO and the MIC need more money. Lots of it. Our public money.
If they get it what will be left to defend?
Echoing his master’s voice when Trump said the US could no longer afford its population — “We can’t take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicare, all these individual things” — Robertson stated: “We cannot defend Britain with an ever-expanding welfare budget.” This is pure Washington-speak and PM Keir Starmer needs to resist it.
They’re gearing up for war with Russia and China who just want to be left alone to develop in peace. The warmongers, of course, have their luxury nuclear bunkers with daylight bulbs, petting zoos and swimming pools to retreat to, leaving us to the fate of the Gazans, Lebanese, Iranians and anyone else they care to smash up.
Not so long ago the UK enjoyed cheap Russian energy and affordable goods from China. Now look at us. And the Hormuz Strait oil shock hasn’t even struck yet.
China already saved the world from America
For the second time in two decades, America has brought the world to the brink of disaster. The first time it happened, China saved the world from America’s Great Crash of 2008. But finding themselves the target, they’re unlikely to keep propping up the entity that’s trying to destroy them.
American politicians like Rick Scott openly welcome the squeeze on Iran and the Hormuz Strait as the latest in a string of assaults on China. By throttling their trade and oil purchases, such as with BRICS, Venezuela and the Panama choke point, they think the hoped-for destruction of China’s economy would be “wonderful”. On top of which, Trump holds the world hostage with the Strait closure as Europe drifts closer to the China lifeboat. A Eurasian landmass peacefully united in trade as it was before Trump launched his trade war in 2018, is the last thing the failing hegemony wants.
Two right wings of the same bird
Why is the UK tagging along with this unhinged mindset? Why don’t they try putting that to a referendum?
Remember that, although US policy has long been to stop any nation that might rival it, it was Obama who turbo-charged the strategy and set the world on the current destructive course towards Death Star status with his Pivot to China in 2010-11. Trump and Biden have since outdone each other to jealously smash China’s kneecaps. I pointed out a few years ago during Trump 1 that China was the newly rich kid who’d strayed onto Mafia turf wearing a Rolex and was about to get rolled. Unfortunately, that was drowned out by the latecomer pro-China accounts cheering on Trump until it was too late.
Trump’s due to meet Xi Jinping in Beijing next month. I wonder who that’s going to go now that China isn’t quite the pushover he expected. Will Xi expect a rational argument with agreements honoured? I doubt it.
Democrats and Republicans are two right wings of the same bird with one intent. So if you think the November mid-terms will save us and clip Trump’s wings. think again. It will only redirect to Russia, keeping China in the firing line.
Death Star mafia turf
Trump’s role, apart from creating the chaos from which the elites will continue to add to their power, has been to denude the American system of its human components. His admin has effectively transformed the country into the Death Star: no social considerations, military and fossil fuel only.
It’s troubling to see the same is happening in the UK, America’s other mini-me, with politicians demanding our social spending the purloined and used for the arms industry in wars of our making, targeting the rise of the global south and the multipolar order.
Defence? It’s our establishment who’s been toeing the Washington line, rejecting peace at every turn and whipping up conflict. Remember Boris Johnson at Biden’s behest squelching the Ukraine peace agreement in March 2022 and ensuring the proxy war on Russia continued? It’s Empire reviving itself in its true form, like the Terminator’s endoskeleton emerging from the flames stripped of all human features. A cold killer machine, run by Cyberdyne Systems and the techbro billionaire class out of Palo Alto and the White House.
Welcome to your future.
