Media and war: startling video interview with Thomas Karat

Watch the video of an enjoyable if troubling chat with Thomas Karat at his Salt Cube Analytics YouTube channel the other week. We cover a wide range of current affairs centring around the collapsing empire’s desperate measures to maintain hegemony, including the Three Body Problem as I see it: America, Europe and China.

I met Thomas on Substack when he published a comprehensive summary of America’s preparation for attacking China. Pacific Wargasm: Inside Trump’s 2025 Blueprint for War with China is a disturbing must-read on the West’s savagery towards the new superpower that’s risen through hard work and ingenuity without a shot being fired. The mainstream media’s culpability in this march to what would be a devastating world conflict is exposed by its utter failure to report on this apocalyptic trajectory.

I remain shocked but completely unsurprised that the political establishment and its media support system have managed to shift blame for our social and economic breakdown onto migration. Many migrants come from countries we destabilised and impoverished by our military manipulations in the first place.

It’s an old scapegoating tactic shamelessly wielded and swallowed wholesale. Hotel bills — seriously? While the rich have made off with billions of public money and doubled their wealth? We’re like cats and laser pens. Climate change, the damage from Brexit (£100 billion a year lost) and imperialist expansion are rendered invisible while the last of the West’s wealth is siphoned away from the population and into the pockets of an openly feral elite.

Meanwhile the war machine continues to destroy lives and suck up our resources while we’re distracted by a few boats. Sense of proportion, much, puh-leaze!

Thomas is stacking up an impressive collection of interviews and essays at Substack and YouTube, resources to which I recommend subscribing. His interviewees include Professor Jeffrey Sachs and former US ambassador Chas Freeman, so I’m honoured to be in distinguished company.
